A Year of Growth Cats: Happy Cat-iversary!So, today is my GROWTH-MINDSET-CAT-IVERSARY! No kidding: I made the first growth mindset cat on June 27 in 2015 as a follow-up to the Upgrading Online conference, and you can see the first cat at Google+ — this was the very first of the cats: I love a challenge!

And looking back on this past year, wow, I am really happy about how the project has taken shape! It's become a way for me to think about my own growth while sharing Dweck's mindset approach with lots of different people, and it has also had a big impact on my classes.

Here are the different directions the projects has gone over the past year:

Growth Mindset Memes blog. Originally, I was thinking I would do other kinds of memes, but the cats have worked so well that the blog is almost all cats; here's the main index for the blog. Next year I might start branching out to make other kinds of memes for aspects of growth mindset that are harder to illustrate with cats. So far, though, cats have been great for the parts of growth mindset that I value the most, such as exploring curiosity and confronting fear.

Pinterest Board. There is a board of Growth Mindset cats, plus one for Growth Mindset Resources (I started that second board this summer in conjunction with the Canvas project; see below).

Flickr Album. I add each new cat to the Flickr album while also rotating the old cats into the sequence:

Widgets. There are javascript widgets also which I've included in the sidebars for many of my blogs: random cats, and also a cat calendar:

Growth Mindset Challenges. This list of challenges is how my students engage with growth mindset, and the success of that project in Fall 2015 led to a related project: Learning by H.E.A.R.T. This challenge-based approach has been such a great addition to my classes! I'm excited to have them both in place for next year.

Diigo. I've bookmarked lots of items for growth mindset at Diigo, and I'm slowly annotating. A goal for this summer is to start tagging all those materials by theme (curiosity, fearlessness, making mistakes, reflection, etc.). I have also bookmarked the growth cats at Diigo; I need to label those by theme too!

YouTube. Started this summer, I began curating a YouTube video playlist for growth mindset; that is something I think will be really useful for my students (I like to share videos in the daily class announcements). Now that I've put the videos into a playlist, it will make it easier for the students to explore and learn more as I share each one:

Canvas: Growth Mindset Playground. Hoping to share ideas about growth mindset with faculty colleagues at my school, I built a demo Canvas course (we are transitioning to Canvas right now): Canvas.MythFolklore.net. Given how the transition is going, though, I'm not really optimistic that it will have any kind of impact at my school, but who knows... In any case, the course is there if some Canvas discussion does start to take shape online, in addition to the face to face training workshops.

Mindset Zone. To go along with the demo Canvas course, I created a blog: Growth Mindset Zone. I'm still not quite sure how to make good use of that blog; as fall semester rolls around, I'll have a better sense of whether the Canvas thing is going to go anywhere (or not). Then I'll be able to decide if I should just abandon the Canvas part of the blog and treat this as a blog for growth mindset materials for their own sake. Either way is good; I'm just waiting to see what happens!

Twitter. In conjunction with that Canvas course, I made a dedicated Twitter account for growth mindset, and that has been great: OUMindsetPlay. I am doing a much better job of following different mindset-related Twitter accounts this way! You can see that Twitter account in the sidebar of this blog.

Storify. As a result of all the Twitter activity at that account, two months ago I started doing a Storify every week with growth mindset content; I put those at the Growth Mindset Zone blog: Growth Mindset Playground - Storify.

Moving forward... Looking at that list, it is a big heap of stuff, but it has grown gradually, day by day; I haven't really had to carve out time for it because it has accumulated as a result of just a little bit of effort each day. And it's fun! In the coming year, I'll see if it makes sense to carry on with the Canvas course; I'm glad to continue, but if it doesn't get any uptake at my school, I'll stop working on that part of the project. Once I see how that is going, it will be easier to know how to develop the Growth Mindset Zone blog. And, in the meantime, I'll keep adding to the Diigo bookmarks and trying to sort and organize them better, too. I'm excited for what I will be able to have in place for my students next year, and I am really grateful for all their feedback on the project as it took shape last year. Now I just need to keep on growing!
For more about this drawing, which is inspired by Bryan Mathers's son and his paper airplanes, see Bryan's notes for this "visual thought" at his blog: Visual Thinkery.

There are some powerful elements in this drawing that are relevant to growth mindset and learning. Here are some thoughts from me:

Productive v. Unproductive Learning: There is indeed a thing called "unproductive learning" ... and that is the kind of learning you do to get a grade on a "big test" (as shown here) or any other kind of learning you are doing to meet other people's goals and standards that are not your own goals and standards. For learning to be productive, it needs to contribute to your own growth as a person in ways that are meaningful to you. Otherwise, you know how it goes: you "learn" something for the test, and then then you forget about it!

Wanting to Learn More: The best learning is the kind of learning that makes you want to learn more. Instead of answering questions and calling it done, productive learning leaves you with more questions: "I wonder..." as you can see here in the drawing. Just think of all the questions you could ask yourself after building some paper airplanes! Learning is never finished, just as growth is not finish: you keep on learning and you keep on growing all your life, and school is just one part of the process.

So.... now we just need to figure out how to make room for more productive learning in school!

Drawing by Bryan Mathers with ideas from Seymour Sarason and Will Richardson.

Questions to Guide You Through the Learning Challenge
@TheLearningPit

After easy learning, it's time for deep learning:

Concept. How many concepts are you thinking about right now? Which one is the most interesting, relevant or puzzling? Let's call your concept X. Why did you choose that one?

Question. What is X? How doe we know what X means? What's the difference between X and concept Y? When would X be good/bad-different-relevant/irrelevant? Is it possible to always/never use X? What if X meant Y?

THE PIT

Cognitive Conflict. What problems can you find with concept X? If you are saying that concept X means Y, then does Y always mean X? In what ways does your definition of X come unstuck?

Construct. When you compare all the ways you found to describe concept X, which one works best? If you were to rank all your ideas about concept X, which one(s) would you prioritize?

Consider. How could you apply X to another situation? What strategies did you use to go through the pit that could also work next time?

Eureka! How clear is your understanding of X now? What makes X more complex than you first thought? What advice could you give someone who hasn't reached the eureka point yet?

After this Review, you are ready to Adapt, Apply, and Transfer.

The way I keep up with things (or try to keep up with them anyway!) is by using Diigo to tag materials that go by.

The main tag I use is just growthmindset, so if you click on that, you will see all the things I've tagged:
growthmindset

There are hundreds of items, but I have some other tags that are helpful. For example, I add the tag videos to the video items:
growthmindset videos

When I put the video in a playlist, I add that as a tag:
growthmindset videos playlist

And you can use the Boolean NO to look for growthmindset videos that are not in the playlist yet:
growthmindset videos NOT playlist

You can add notes to a Diigo item, and when I do that, I add the tag annotated, so here are my growthmindset items that have an annotation from me:
/growthmindset annotated

I use the tag challenges for the growth mindset resources I share with my students for them to explore:
/growthmindset annotated challenges

As you can see, I've got a lot of growth mindset materials, so I need to start making some subthemes to use to (re)organize all this stuff.

The growth mindset approach is composed of many different interwoven themes, and I'll be using this blog as a way to collect materials relevant to those different themes. One of the themes that is most appealing to me is CURIOSITY. Here are some thoughts about the importance of curiosity in growth mindset:

Quotes from Carol Dweck's book Mindset:

About a precocious child named Michael: Michael must have started with a special ability, but, for me, the most outstanding feature is his extreme love of learning and challenge. [...] Most often people believe that the "gift" is the ability itself. yet what feeds it is that constant, endless curiosity and challenge seeking.

About a football player named Faulk: As he watched [football], he was always asking the question Why? "Why are we running this play?" "What are we attacking it this way?" "Why are we doing that?" "Why are they doing this?" "That question," Faulk says, "basically got me involved in football in a more in-depth way." Faulk sees his skills as the product of his insatiable curiosity and study.

About Thomas Edison: Young Tom was taken with experiments and mechanical things (perhaps more avidly than most), but machines and technology were part of the ordinary midwestern boy's experience. What eventually set him apart was his mindset and drive. He never stopped being the curious, tinkering boy looking for new challenges.

This is a perfect example of live content: as you browse online, you just bookmark articles in Diigo, write up some annotation to explain your interest in the article, grab an image if you want... and presto: that appears in Canvas too, automatically.

You can see the Canvas page here: Growth Mindset Playground Diigo. And remember, that's a completely open, public page — just click and go! Here's a screenshot:

Here's what you need to make this work:

1. Use Diigo to create bookmarks. It's easy to create a Diigo account (they have some special services for educators too), and there are some browser plugins that allow you to save bookmarks easily as you are browsing. Think about how you like to search and organize the articles as you choose your tags.

2. Optional: add annotations. I usually bookmark lots of stuff, and when I get time I then go back through the bookmarks and add notes (Diigo lets you edit bookmarks later to add notes). When I annotate an article, I add the tag "annotated." That allows me to easily find the bookmarks that are annotated, and I can also search for "NOT annotated" in order to see which articles don't have annotations (yet).

3. Optional: grab images. In addition to annotations that you add to a bookmark, Diigo lets you grab an image to save along with the URL. I just recently started saving images in Diigo this way (inspired by my use of Pinterest, which is totally image-driven), and I am really liking how the images provide good visual cues to help me remember the contents of the articles.

4. Put the Diigo RSS in Inoreader. You can then follow these instructions for Inoreader RSS in Canvas. Diigo is a really useful RSS service: there is an RSS feed for any Diigo search in my bookmarks, and the RSS link is at the bottom of each Diigo search page. So, for example, when I search for my Diigo bookmarks that are for growth mindset with annotations but not videos and not from my own blog, I get this page, with an RSS link at the bottom:
growthmindset annotated NOT videos NOT gmzone

So, just follow those instructions, using the Diigo RSS feed for step #2 in those instructions.

And have fun: Diigo is a really powerful tool, and you can build your own set of tags and feeds to keep track of important while also sharing it with your students!Laura Gibbshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04994025992373244815noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6351450164791599101.post-14999190466957661392015-05-22T20:09:00.000-04:002016-12-17T10:13:30.253-05:00Storify: #OU_LMS16 - The Life of a HashtagBefore the Canvas decision was even announced, Mark Morvant and others from CTE and IT were leading town halls on campus about the LMS options, and Mark designated #OU_LMS16 as the hashtag to use for that, and I've been creating Storify collections every week to track the use of the hashtag, and I've been using it myself.

As you'll see, I'm pretty much the only person using the hashtag, ha ha, but I hope that will change as the rollout advances. Even with just one user, though, the hashtag stream is useful! I follow everybody I can find at OU (OU people and OU programs), and I add the #OU_LMS16 hashtag to relevant tweets. I hope to start following some more Canvas people and also people institutions this summer in order to learn more.
Unlike other RSS feed readers, Inoreader allows to create your own RSS feeds by remixing existing feeds, and it can then export that content as an RSS feed or as HTML. The HTML option means you can display the content of an RSS feed in a Canvas page!

So, just to take one example, here is a page in Canvas which contains the RSS feed from my Growth Mindset Cats blog: Canvas RSS-Inoreader.

Here's how to set something like this up:

1. Get an Inoreader account. Everything you need to do is part of the free Inoreader service! Go to Inoreader.com.

2. Find the RSS feed you want to use. You can get the RSS feed for a blog, or you can grab the feed for a specific label at that blog. Any kind of RSS feed will work.

3. Subscribe to the feed in Inoreader. Just copy-and-paste the feed address into the upper right-hand corner. Make sure you add the feed to a folder; you can put multiple feeds in the same folder if you want to combine different sources.

4. Export the folder as RSS/HTML. Click on the folder, then click on Folder Settings at the top of the Inoreader screen, then Folder Information, and then click Export to turn it on. After you turn on the export, you will see the different Export options:

5. Configure the HTML Clip. Now that you have turned on the folder for export, click on the HTML Clip link and make your choices. For the Canvas page I made, I put in a title and set the items to 5, with "magazine" as the view option.

6. Configure the iframe in Canvas. Copy the iframe code from Inoreader, and then adjust the width and height as needed. I set the width="750" and height="1400" but you can choose what best suits your needs (although you need at least 750 pixels width for the magazine view). Paste the HTML code into your Canvas page and you are good to go!

After you set up the RSS feed(s) like this, the content will update in Canvas automatically!
